AJAX has failed to open their 2019 account with a victory, falling to Marcellin by 50 points on a hot Saturday afternoon at Marcellin College.

The visitors started slowly with Marcellin’s aerial dominance proving pivotal, with their key forwards proving to be too much for AJAX defenders who were under-siege in the early stages. A sluggish first half by the Jackas saw them trail the home side by 40 points at the long break

The Jackas lifted their intensity around the football in the second half and were able to stem the bleeding, however the damage had already been done.

After trailing by 56 points at the final change, a competitive last quarter by the visitors saw them win the last quarter and trim the final margin to 50 points, as Marcellin ran away winners 15.13-103 to 8.5-53

After Marcellin dominated territory in the first 10 minutes of the game, AJAX was able to wrestle back momentum, as strong first-quarter performances by Brad Caplan and skipper Nick Lewis attempted to drag the Jackas back into the contest

Coach Adam Andrews expressed his early frustrations to his players at the first change, emphasising the importance of “defending the spread”, however praising the “fight” of his defenders after a first quarter where they were bombarded with inside-50s.

Marcellin continued their dominance in the air in the second term as a dominant patch early in the quarter saw them turn their contested game up a notch, ultimately extending their lead to beyond 6-goals. AJAX’s ball movement began to improve late in the term, as beautiful switch of the play from Dylan Rothschild resulted in a classy goal from Nicholas Cohen.

After Marcellin scored 2 quick goals to begin the second half, a clever soccer goal again from Cohen seemed to ignite the visitors as their began to gain ascendancy around the footy. Cameron Nankin continued to have some important touches, while Kane Nissenbaum’s class and skill also stood out. First-gamer Benji Krongold was starting to have an influence, as the Sandringham Dragon product was thrown into the midfield and his attack on the ball was a standout. Jake Lew was competing well from limited opportunities all day, but an awkward contest right before the 3QT siren saw him come off extremely worse-for-ware, as his afternoon ended due to injury.

The final quarter saw the Jackas continue to scrap, as the sting was taken out of the contest and the scoring dried up. Krongold continued his fine debut, as fellow youngster Aaron Bryer was also a strong contributor. AJAX’s gallant effort to rectify their first-half woes proved too difficult, as they saw themselves trailing by 50 points as the final siren sounded

In a disappointing day, captain Nick Lewis led from the front and was outstanding with 33 disposals, 7 marks and 9 tackles, as Brad Caplan (30 disposals, 6 marks, 1 goal) and Dov Paltiel (21 disposals, 6 marks, 1 goal) were also solid contributors

Debutant Benji Krongold (20 disposals, 6 tackles) got better as the game wore on, as he displayed his talent with his fearless attack on the ball and clean hands around stoppages.

Speaking with the 17-year-old after the match, he labelled “defensive lapses” as a key reason for the loss, as Marcellin’s “run and carry” game proving too much at times for the visitors. He said “the speed of the game was surprisingly high” as he took some time to adjust to the tempo and the bigger bodies.

Next up, AJAX will face Old Ivanhoe Grammarians at Chelsworth Park on Saturday at 2pm.

The Jackettes had a brilliant start to their 2019 campaign with a strong away win against St Bernard’s.

The girls bought a new game plan to the table and executed it almost to perfection, making it tough for the opposition to get on the board.  With a number of new players joining the team, any concerns were laid to rest early as whether they would be competitive.  Highlights from the game included a great midfield performance by Isabel Worth , Maddie Smart providing a dominant ruck display, Jessie Israel’s 7 goal haul and Hayley Mrocki who showed her tireless spirit in and around the packs together with some silky moves on the wing.  There were strong marks, clever handballs and too many individual performances to mention but on the whole a wonderful team performance resulting in an 89 point win.

Next week the Jackettes are away against De La Salle, Basil Street, Reserve, Malvern @ 11:40 AM.
